I went through a phase, a phase of neglect, a phase of deep sorrow, a phase of feeling sorry for myself.

But once I realised my true worth, I beat myself out of it. And although I am feeling so much more worthy, I am left with this draining and tired skin, a constant reminder of what I went through.

So now to focus on myself again. Here are a few of my tips. Hope that they work for you too.

Inner Healing

You cant heal fully until you have done the work for yourself- yes. This may not exactly be what you were looking for in this post- but I promise It will come. I need to go through this, not just for you- but for myself too. A constant reminder to myself to just be a little selfish at times.

Learning how to love yourself will help in giving a fresher look, and abolish the tired skin.

Water

Now this is a hard one for me. I Do not like water, unless it boiling with a teabag dipped inside and loads of sugar and a dash of milk. BUT… we all know the effects of caffeine on the skin.

Water is so important, so important. so important! (I’m telling myself guys). Lack of hydration causes the skin to get fine lines, wrinkles and sagging skin. All of which gives me the tired skin look.

If water doesn’t suit you- try sugar free and caffeine free beverages, like flavoured seltzers or even just a little lemon and mint in a bottle of water can help get the skin back to hydrated.

Moisturise. Moisturise. Moisturise

I cannot emphasise this one enough. Dryness in skin is due to lack of hydration and moisturising, especially because of the constant change in weather in the UK, the skin can get affected in different ways.

Drying skin creates crack and open spaces in the skin which allow dead skin cells to grow and breed, giving it the tired skin look. In order to attack this, moisturising 2-3 or even more times a day is very effective.

When looking for a good moisturiser look for ceramide (repair skin barrier) and hyronolic acid (my favourite word in skin care) and don’t forget a good SPF.

Exfoliation

I don’t remember the last time I did this, when I went through my slump- exfoliating and cleansing were the least of my worries, going to bed with a full face of makeup was easier. Big mistake!

Exfoliating is so important, it rids of the days dead cells, giving you brighter fresher looking skin, and you will also find with regular exfoliation make up and skincare products, sink in better.

For day to day exfoliation I would recommend a facial cleanser/ scrub, but once a week a face peel or a good exfoliating mask can be a therapeutic experience.

I personally love the Elemis Rose Cleansing balm

Night cream

As a women going into her 40’s, having spent half my life with sleepless nights, school errands, work errands, and just life errands. Sleep is so important to me. Sleeping a good 7-9 hours is important part of good skincare too.

Sleep is when the skin cells repair themselves, and so to get the full benefit, a good night sleep is so beneficial.

I know sometimes with life’s trials and tribulations, sleep is not as easy as we make out- but their are products which can help promote sleep.

I have always been fascinated with products from This Works, they offer balms, pillow sprays, bath soaks, and have been proven to work in aiding sleep.

A good night cream or mask can also aid sleep. There is nothing better than a face feeling and smelling as soft as baby skin. A good night cream which induces collagen would be something I would recommend. Or a night mask- that feeling of washing off in the shower in the morning, and feeling the skin plump is second to none.

Makeup

Right there is nothing wrong with makeup, only thing is if your face is covered with makeup more hours in the day than not, then it can become a problem. The skin needs to be able to breathe, so allow it.

Save the heavy make up days for the special occasions, swop the foundation for a bb creams, and look after the skin so that once the skin becomes better you automatically feel more confident in a bb cream.

If you are not ready yet to tone down on the makeup, look for the more radiant, and glowing make up, these will help give a luminosity to the skin, cream foundation and highlighter are more hydrating, and don’t leave a matte finish.

Healthy Diet

My biggest weakness. Caffeine is a big No!!! and I really do need to stop it. I do I do I DO!

I’m not going to go into what we shouldn’t have, I will get depressed thinking about it, But I will tell you what’s good for you, so we can start inviting that into our lives.

Fruits (obviously) especially high in water fruits like melon are really good for the skin and overall hydration. Also anti- oxidant rich fruits like cranberries and blue berries help with skin. Vitamin C rich fruits are also a must oranges, kiwis, tangerine, grapefruit, generally all fruits are good for the skin and overall health.

A nice balanced diet removing junk like biscuits, crisps and fizzy drinks, will give you not just a glow but will also make you feel better.

I think that’s enough to make a start. Once we conquer this we can move on to more. Baby steps
